TUTION AND TOMMY
Hi, I'm Tommy I have over 20 years experience with a camera, starting out solely with video back in the dark ages and into the digital era, working and travelling in various media roles to Europe Zambia, Morocco, Italy, Norway, Uganda and Canada.
In 2010 I picked up a DSLR for the first time and took off to New Zealand and teaching myself through books and magazines, totally not doing justice to the wonderful landscapes of a fine country.
I managed to score what I see as my first official photography job as a wildlife photographer on whale and dolphin tour boats, which saw me out all day every day interacting with people of the world and some pretty epic wildlife.
This time and knowledge gained gifted me an opportunity to catch a very special once in a lifetime set of images that made it to the pages of NZ Geographic Magazine. The feeling of capturing those images has influenced my photography and learning journey ever since.
I continued shooting and learning, naturally beginning to teach people who stayed in my dorm rooms and friends along the way, seeing a knowledge gap appearing that I had the ability to fill. Each time I learned something new I was drawn to share it, I believe this is the best way to create a deeper personal knowledge.
I would advertise free tuition on Gumtree when I lived in Australia and began to meet people from all over the world who wanted to learn more about their camera, one of my most memorable sessions was with a Korean teenager called Kim in Brisbane, his written English was enough to book a session but communicating the technical aspects of photography on the day was like a hilarious cross between yoga and tai chi.
I’d follow my buddies as they surfed the Australian coast which gave me a continuous canvas to train my eyes and mind whilst trying to translate this to the camera, in the evenings we would have our sausage and noodles for dinner while everyone piled in to watch the slides roll around from the day, the power of images and peoples reactions continued to inspire me.
I began to really focus my attention on the spontaneous nature of travel, people and adventure, what I saw and the relationships forged along the way. This forced me to work not only on photography but myself and how I interacted with the environment, the people, and the moment.
At 31 I returned to education and at 35 I now have a bachelors degree in commercial photography, If anything the degree made me see a different way of teaching but ultimately left me confident that I could create and educate people in a more adaptable, positive, inspired and experiential way.
I’m excited to be able to share my experience and knowledge through a selection of fun, progressive, practical, tuition and coaching sessions at home in Devon and on my International Experience Photography Adventures.
My beginner sessions lay the foundations for understanding your camera and fuel your creative side with the tools and understanding to be able to create the images you desire with any camera you choose. Intermediate sessions are for those photographers who have processed the basics and will be tailored to your requirements focusing on specific elements, techniques, or genres you wish to refine or elevate to the next level.
The Ugandan Experience Photography Adventure is an intimate small group trip for a maximum of 6 people. Travelling to Africa is a truly fantastic challenge, it’s not easy by any means, your journey is much more than a photography workshop.
